My understanding is that the chief of VW went to the chief of Porsche asking 
once again to be able to use the Porsche boxer motor (and yes, it's 
air-cooled). VW had tried previously to get the engine but Porsche denied the 
request. Now, things in the automotive business world have changed and 
apparently Porsche has relented, allowing VW to use it's (Porsche's) famed 
air-cooled boxer engine. I think VW recognized the resurgence of the classic 
Beetle and decided they needed to widen it's appeal from cute secretary 
sled/chick-mobile to something with a little testosterone ...
