And I thought that VW bought and now owns Porsche.

My understanding is that the chief of VW went to the chief of Porsche asking
once again to be able to use the Porsche boxer motor (and yes, it's
air-cooled). VW had tried previously to get the engine but Porsche denied
the request. Now, things in the automotive business world have changed and
apparently Porsche has relented, allowing VW to use it's (Porsche's) famed
air-cooled boxer engine. I think VW recognized the resurgence of the classic
Beetle and decided they needed to widen it's appeal from cute secretary
sled/chick-mobile to something with a little testosterone ...

planning on phasing it out in 2011 and introducing a slighter longer,
slightly flatter roofed New Beetle and calling it the New NEW Beetle. Then
by 2017 they plan on introducing yet another beetle and this time, they are
gonna be closer to getting it right by having a boxer style engine in it.
