Getting the cable length right, no longer being able to use a stock
cable, having to explain to anyone else that ever has to touch the bug
WHERE the new handle is located, etc. etc.

I would create a new mount that leaves he mechanism exactly where it is
now and make a "handle extension" that drops the handle itself out
below the dash. The mount for your police radio should leave that area
open behind the glove box door even if it uses a "filler plate" to
completely fill the door opening (preventing you from using the hood
latch handle without the dropping extension).
