Bert, Go for the easiest thing first with a backup plan for the ultimate.
Go buy a new speedo cable and put it in. But be prepared to pull you speedometer and rebuild it. You will not know for several days whether it was the cable or not, but I have found(more than once) that once I replaced the cable, the speedometer failed shortly afterward....or the cable broke when the speedometer locked up....and it is far better to fix the speedo before it does that.
