I believe you nailed the problem Mike. With the cracked hub, the fan can do all kinds of gyroscopic procession type of maneuvers and grind itself on the fan shroud. It'll make all kinds of funny noises too. If can't locate a replacement fan, a really good tig welder should be able to weld this up for you. While he's at it, have him weld all the little vanes in place so your fan won't disintegrate from fatigue in the future. I don't ever recall my wave washer being too sloppy but there is some. It needs to be able to sit under the nut fairly centered as I recall. Don't forget to check the classifieds on the thesamba.com - you can find some pretty obscure parts there.
