buy another fan. 72 should be dog house setup. there were 3 different width
of fans for dog house setup,so take yours along to parts store . do not
weld,JB weld or lock tite your fan back together as if it cracks completely
loose it can take out your engine case.

Subject: [vintagvw] Noise on 1972 Std. Bug w/1600 Stock Dual Port

Good afternoon from Alabama.

I have need of some advice regarding my 72 std. Bug with 108,000 miles. It's
a stock 1600DP.

It's been running fine but a few days ago I started to hear a strange noise
especially sitting at idle. I got home and started the engine and I hear a
pronounced metallic sound emanating from the generator area. It is much
worse at idle than at higher rpms. If I give it some gas the noise seems to
go away. It doesn't sound internal to the engine and the car runs fine so I
don't think it is internal like valves or such.

Thinking it might be generator or cooling fan related, removed the drive
belt and pulley halves and started the engine letting it run off the battery
for a few minutes. No noise at all. I then took my cordless drill and put it
on the threaded end of the gen. shaft and ran the drill turning the
generator and fan to see if I could hear a bearing noise or something.
Nothing I could tell.

A friend who owns multiple VW's listened to it and agrees that it either gen
or cooling fan.

Assuming that, I have removed air cleaner, carburetor, and then I reached to
the front side of the cooling shroud and loosened the 36mm nut holding the
fan on while holding the generator shaft. Once that was loose I removed the
4 - 10 mm head bolts holding the generator backing plate to the cooling
shroud and carefully removed the generator from the car and then the cooling
fan.

FYI, the layout of my assembled parts is different than the fig 6-7 in
section 6.4 of the orange Bentley service manual for my car. Starting from
the front of the car, the parts are 36mm nut, thick wave washer (concave
surface facing front), cooling fan, 3 - .013" shims, keyed collar, backing
plate and generator.

I found on disassembly that there is a small broken piece of sheet metal
right at the hub hole in the cooling fan. Even though the nut was tight when
I tried to loosen it; maybe the broken sheet metal allowed the fan to shift
slightly especially at low speeds. Also the wave washer does seem to have a
lot of "slop" around when it fits over the keyed collar.

I have some pictures of what I found but didn't know if it was OK to attach
to this email. I can email to someone if anyone wants to see them in order
to offer advice.

If I turn the generator shaft I feel no bad spots or roughness that might
indicate a bad generator bearing. The generator was installed in 1994 and
has 22,000 miles on car since install.

So I sense the culprit is the fan and wave washer so I'll look to replace
both of those. I hope finding those parts won't be difficult.

If any listees can offer any advice or want to take a look at the pictures
or suggest sources for these 2 items; I'd sure appreciate any help.

Thanks so much.
