Hey Bert, got a suggestion for you.  On the wing vent trim of my 72 VW, I 
sanded them with a fine steel wool, then maksed off the area and painted 
said trim with aluminum colored spray pant. I got the paint from Wal Mart. 
It turned out very nice, in my opinion.
