Volks, I'm working on a 1972 SuperBeetle (okay, okay - but it belonged to a relative), hoping to make it rust-free and roadworthy for safe resale.
When I rolled it into my driveway three weeks ago (the engine is being rebuilt elsewhere) all was well: it steered fine, has new brakes, wheels and tires, and the steering is taut. Today I stuck the key into the igswitch, turned it to On (there's no battery or engine just now) - and the steering lock remains locked. All the sensitive jiggling and careful tiggling and firm tapping of the key I try has no effect: that little pawl remains set. I can't even tow it away with the wheels locked. I obviously don't want to break off the key, so I'm being careful. How do I fix it - short of total removal of the steering column?
