Volks,

When I installed a new headliner (TMI, perf vinyl) in my beetle in about
2007, I used 3M 08088 General Trim Adhesive for the various flaps, sills,
etc., as directed. When I re-did coverings on some side upholstery panels,
I used 3M 08090 Super Trim Adhesive (the yellow stuff) to secure coverings
to the hardboard.

Neither has turned out to be satisfactory, and I’m wonder whether my
situation is unique. The adhesive – both the clear on the headliner and the
yellow on the door panels – has loosened and let go, and turned to a
honey-like goo. It gets hot here in the South – many days in the 90° to 97°
range – but that’s not unusual in cars in the summertime, right? Even where
the black fabric-backed PVC door panels were stuck to their hardboard
backing (I had to scrape off the shoddy factory glue and replace it) they
have all pulled loose around the edges. The DAF contact cement I used on
the carpeting (footwells, tunnel, kick panels) has not fared much better: it
has pulled loose, but at least it hasn’t turned syrupy.

No solvents used, good surface cleaning was done, and the upholstery
materials were new. Any ideas (a) what might have caused this, (b) what I
should use when I re-glue stuff, and (c) whether there’s a better adhesive
available (I’m getting ready to do a new headliner in a ’72 SuperBeetle).
