I always thought they were sound-related. Not enough material to do much
insulating, Maybe to keep the tar board from rattling somehow?

SuperBeetle) there are strips of jute carpet padding glued to each of
the 10vertical “ribs” in the sheet metal. I’m replacing the old liner
and am curious: What is the function of these strips of carpet
padding? Better sound insulation? Heat insulation? Airchanneling? I
am cutting some new strips (from an old polyolefin carpet) to glue
back in, but I’d feel better if I knew their purpose.
