Volks,

Behind the tarboard liner for the engine compartment (in a '72 Super Beetle)
there are strips of jute carpet padding glued to each of the 10 vertical
"ribs" in the sheet metal. I'm replacing the old liner and am curious:
What is the function of these strips of carpet padding? Better sound
insulation? Heat insulation? Air channeling? I am cutting some new strips
(from an old polyolefin carpet) to glue back in, but I'd feel better if I
knew their purpose.
