Hi Darla, No, you don't have to be able to see. If you hold down the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds, you've held them down more than long enough for the Apple logo to appear. I just suggested having someone look for the Apple logo because the phone hadn't been responding, so extra feedback could be encouraging.
