Regardless of how you go into contacts, you need to edit the specific contact and then the delete button is the last item.

My wife said she's leaving me because of my addiction to Facebook, I didn't comment, I just gave her a thumbs up.

I believe to delete a contact you have to go in to contacts on the main
screen, not through the phone portion.

Hi Kevin,

I had some trouble doing this too, but here's how I finally
accomplished it. This is on the 4s. I don't know if it would be
different on other phones.

First locate the contact you want to delete.
Next double-tap the Edit button which you will find in the upper
portion of the screen. I can't remember if it's toward the right or
left, but it is definitely at the top.
Move to the bottom of the contact info. You can do this by tapping
with four fingers near the bottom of the screen.
Double-tap the Delete button, which is the last element on the screen
and is located at the very bottom.
On the next screen you should find a delete contact button and a
cancel button. Double-tap the Delete Contact button to remove the
contact.
Return to your contacts list and the contact will be gone.

I hope this helps.

I do not see an edit button.
A refresh button, and an add button.
A search field then the contacts are listed.

Subject: deleting a contact?

How does one delete a contact?
I don't see any edit or delete function at all.
Within a contact if you edit you can see a delete button but then the
"done" button is grayed out.
Thanks.
