I wonder if that's something Apple requires, or something that's a bug in
this radio? Getting good assistance to set something like this up might be
hard because my family doesn't use any kind of a smart phone.

It plugs into the dock, but utilizes the sound output to send the
audio to its own head phone jack.
When I plug it in the audio output is disabled, even through the
headphone jack.
