Hi Ed, There are websites where apps are reviewed and more often than not there will be a link on the site to where you can download it. However, ultimately, you still have to install iTunes on your computer in order to put said app on your device unless you visit the website from your phone. The process that people have been talking about called jailbreaking restricts this requirement some what. There are a fair few people (Not naming names) on this list that for whatever reason discourage it by spreading fear, uncertainty and doubt about the process without knowing that much about it, but if I'm correct in assuming that this is a work iPhone that you've been given, its probably not the best idea in the world to jailbreak it - it wouldn't really solve your problem anyway.
