FourSquare can also let you know what's around you, although it's not a GPS application. You can also see where your friends have been and let them know where you've been. You can also find out information about the places you visit, such as tips, deals and so on. It'll also recommend other places near by based on the places you've checked into before. You also collect points for different check ins and milestones, so you can make a game out of it, and compete with your friends.
If you don't want you're friends to know where you've been then you shouldn't use FourSquare or check into a place you don't want them to know about. You can invite friends to follow you on FourSquare, and you have to accept any invitation from a friend before they can follow you. You also choose whether you want to post on Facebook or Twitter, and of course, you also can control who can follow you on those social networking sites as well. If this isn't the kind of information you want to share with your friends then FourSquare isn't for you.
