Hiya all. For those of you in the U.S. I hope you had a great 4th of
July celebrating the country's birthday. For those outside of the U.S.
who might also celebrate it, I hope it was good as well. For those who
don't celebrate the US. birthday, I still hope you had a great day.
Yesterday we spent it getting a swimming pool for the family. I think
the maintenance is going to cost more than the pool. Oh, now onto the
reason for this post? See? I wrote about subject lines and I'm not even
talking about subject lines. I'm sure it can be quite annoying to some
when you open a message with topic X and it discusses Y.
So, the reason I'm posting this is to remind people to make your subject
lines meaningful to the message. For example I recently saw a couple of
threads called "question" and "hi". Those are generic threads. I mean,
isn't the list to ask questions? So, by that definition, should all
subjects be "question"? Oh no, here goes my sarcasm again. In any case,
since there are over 1300 members on the list, and since many members
are subscribed to many other lists, it's highly important to make your
subject lines descriptive. This way, members who browse by subject only
can answer your question if it's clear what you are writing about. When
I don't moderate a list, I usually skip the help or question subject
topics and realize of course that I might have missed a chance to answer
something, or missed out on some great information. To those of you who
still answer questions even if the subject is vague or generic, my hat's
off to you. That takes extra time.
So, all I'm asking is that you stop and think before you send. Sometimes
what I do is write my message first and then go and fill in the subject.
I find that after writing my problem or question down, it's most fresh
in my mind and then I can come up with a better subject line. This way
it's not so generic. And it doesn't even have to be a long subject. Good
examples are "help with Voxie pro" or "what is a good grilling app" or
"moving apps across the screen" or "creating folders".
Thanks, and everyone, please enjoy the 5th of July.
