I think I might be inclined to try doing a reset by holding both the power switch and the home switch down for ten seconds to see if the device is just confused unless you can feel that it is a physical thing with the button itself in which case, you probably have no choice but to have it repaired.
I have found, over the years that sometimes, these electronic devices scramble their own brains requiring either a reset of some type or with some things, removal of the battery with reinsertion. Obviously, we can't do that with the iPhone, but we can try the reset.
