OtterBox makes several different case models; beyond just the Impact and
Defender.
The Defender is bulky and your phone is enclosed in a hard plastic shell
with rubber.
If your phone is enclosed in the OttterBox you have, chances are it's the
Defender.
The Impact is low profile. Your phone sits in the rubber case with the
screen exposed. The rubber covers the sides and bottom.

Ok. I don't understand. What is the difference between the
defender and the impact? I thought I had the defender, but now
after all this talk about different cases, I am not sure. I know
i have a otterbox but not sure which model. Thanks.

I've come to the conclusion that the iPhone is very-well made. In
fact,
I've seen people drop their phones with no protection and rarely
a
scratch. This is the 4 and 4S I'm talking about. However, glass
being
glass, if hit in just the right angle and right way, still can
shatter.
I wonder if the cases out there are more for show than for
protection,
but still, if it gives someone piece of mind, then they should
get the
best protection out there. If even one tiny scratch appears on
the
phone, you will easily lose $100 value when and if you try to
resell it.
When I had the 3GS phone it lived inside the Otter Box Defender
case for
99% of its life, but I find with the 4S, that I'm not as
paranoid. Not
only that, but I want to have colorful cases and cases which show
off
the iPhone rather than hiding it. The TPU cases I mentioned are
colorful
and have either an s-pattern or circle pattern in back which go
nicely
with the over all design of the phone, and they provide some
protection
against dropage as well.

That's my take on all this for what it's worth.

cases are
 really advisable?

Hi, actually neither. But not because I don't like Otter Box. In
fact, I
highly recommend them. I'm just a person who is a free spirit
and likes
trying new things and different things to experiment. So, I'm
currently
using some cases which are made of a tpu rubber, this is a bit
of a
harder rubber, and doesn't feel like the silicon rubber that the
Impact
case feels like. This means less friction, but also less
catching on
things like in the pocket. It also means a bit of less bulk. In
fact, I
just got an order for 9 tpu cases which are all different colors
ranging
from purple, to blue, to clear, to neon yellow. They don't cover
the
bottom part of the screen like the impact case from Otter Box
does, but
it does form-fit the phone very well and really let's it shine
through.

The nice thing about these cases is that you can put them on and
take
them off with ease, yet they stay on the phone very nicely. I
also like
the fact that I can go back to my impact case whenever I want.
The one I
don't use any more is the Defender case. I finally got tired of
the
bulk, but again, this isn't anything bad against Otter Box,
since that's
 the purpose of the case.

 Thanks Raul,
 Which one do you use?

Hi, the impact case is less bulky, but I found that it tends to
catch
on things due to the nature of the rubber. This doesn't make the
case
bad, but it does have a bit of friction. And that can be a good
thing
because it won't slide so easily across a surface. I think you
will
like the impact if you get it.

 Hi all,
For anyone who has had both the OtterBox defender case and the
impact case, which is less bulky.
If using the impact case, can you easily fit your phone into a
pants
 pocket or purse or bag?
I'm thinking of ordering one from speed dots.
 Thanks,
