When on the first "friends" screen, you can view a list of recent
places you have checked in at and may be able to see your point total,
but I don't remember if the points show on the screen. There is a
"check-in" button in the upper right corner, just below the status
bar. The other tab pages in the app include, the explore tab, in the
bottom middle, and the tab that will likely have your name in the
bottom right corner. Explore will show a list of places that are
nearby, and if you click on the third tab that has your name, then you
can view a summary of your most recent activity, trends of most
popular places you've visited in last 6 months, and other details of
your activity. When you check-in somewhere, after you double tap the
check-in button, Foursquare may take several seconds to query your GPS
position so it can show you what is nearby to your location. You then
can swipe right to find the place that you're at. Once you find the
name of the business you are at, double tap it. If the iOS device does
that rising tri-tone, then you are on a new page. If not, then you may
need to swipe right until you find where you are again. This time
though, when you find your place, the business's name and address will
be listed, and you can double tap on it and the new page will come up.
This final page will have a text area for you to say what you're up
to, options to post to Facebook and Twitter (if you have enabled that
in settings), and will allow you to "check-in" and complete the
check-in process. Once this is done, a page will come up saying where
you just checked in to. Periodically, you will unlock badges, and
these will pop up after you have checked in somewhere. You will have
to find and double tap the continue button to go on.

Happy exploring and checking in,
Wayne
