Hi Kim, I am typing this on my iPhone 3GS and it seems to be working fine, although it seems slightly sluggish compared to my 4S.
It may be that you need to make your gestures more deliberate, and be sure that you are not accidently sliding while making the gestures.. I use my thumbs, and kind of stab at the keyboard..
