I recently read somewhere that in one of the upcoming iOS versions the Passbook app will be improved to offer such functionality. I think ultimately we may look forward to when the Passbook app knows that you are in a particular store and where your rewards card is displayed right on the lockscreen so you can show it without even having to unlock your phone. This is how electronic boarding passes work now, if I add a flight to the Air Canada app I can check in for that flight 24 hours before and once I am done I have the option to add the boarding app to Passbook. Once I do that, the boarding pass is on my lock screen just like a notification and I can double tap on it to display it including the barcode which gets scanned at the security gate.
