Alan, these are not iTunes movies but homemade videos made on the phone: does
the movies checkbox still apply?

Thank you.

Paul,

First let me state the obvious and make sure you have the password for your
encrypted iTunes backup. Without it, you won't be able to restore it to your
new phones. There has been discussion on this list about forgotten passwords
lately and you don't want that surprise at restoration time.

I would recommend that you make sure your old iPhone is connected to your
computer and make sure you tab over to Movies while the iPhone has focus. With
the Movies checked, tabbing should take you to a tick box labeled Sync Movies
which you should tick. If you tab one more time, there is a box for which
movies to automatically include and you should select this box and make sure
all is the option.

After you make sure everything you want synced from your phone to your computer
with iTunes is marked, sync them again and then make another iTunes encrypted
backup. That way you'll be sure that everything that's on your phone will also
be on your computer and included in the iTunes encrypted backup.

Anna's suggestion to also do an iCloud backup is a good one since safety nets
are wise to use. I would recommend you first restore your iTunes encrypted
backup provided you've made sure it is complete and you know the password.

Good luck with the restore and enjoy your new iPhones.

Ok, so would you suggest trying to restore the backup from iTunes first; if
something doesn’t work, can you back up from iCloud; if so, how do you do that?

And as far as those videos how can I be sure those back up?

Thanks.

Hi paul,

When you do a back-up, everything should be backed up, especially if you
transfer purchases first. However, i definitely recommend backing up to iCloud
as well, just in case something goes wrong with the iTunes backup. Last fall,
,my purchases weren't transferred to iTunes for some reason, even though I had
told iTunes to transfer purchases, so I had to restore from my iCloud backup
instead.

Best,

Anna

All, tomorrow is upgrade day; already made encripted backups using iTunes but
have a few questions.

  1. I thought I remembered a place where you could select what is backed up
and what is not; at some point I selected apps, and was asked if I wanted to
back up ones that were not in my iTunes library; I said yes and all was well.
My wife was not asked the same question, so I manually chose to transfer
purchases, and it seemed to work. So how do we know if photos, contacts, apps,
and videos will be backed up? I have 2 videos I definitely do not want to lose,
and no iTunes category mentioned videos, only songs. I know in the “other”
category, I had more megs of “other” than my wife did so wondered if the
“other” consisted of those videos?

  2. Is there a way, if any of this stuff was not backed up to iTunes to later
get it from iCloud?

  3. Should I also do a manual backup to iCloud tonight, and will it do any
good at all?

Two years ago when we did this, it was a nightmare, and I want to avoid that
this time.

  Thank you.

  Paul
