The only slight problem with that approach arises if you don't happen to know on what year your contact was born. :) I guess you could just pick a random year, but if you're really particular about record keeping this could be annoying.
If you sync your calendar with some other service, such as Outlook or the MAC's calendar, you can simply enter the all day event on the other device and it'll sync over fine.
