A Alex, I failed to put the question clearly. Here's Take 2. Under "Settings, Notifications," the Gmail app is listed in the "do not include" section. Background refresh for all apps is toggled off under "Settings, General, "background Refresh. Given this scenario, why does the Gmail app tell me the number of unread messages in my Inbox when I flick to its name on one of the pages of my home screen in preparation for opening it? For example, if there are 3 unread messages, VoiceOver will say "Gmail 3."
