Oh, okay. You can have the badge on or off, again in Notification Settings. Even though it has a badge, it may not be refreshing in the background, which seems to be the heart of your question (why would it be refreshing if you don't want it to?) When you open the app, it refreshes. If you close it with 3 messages left unread, it will know it has 3 unread messages. If it updates that badge later even though you haven't opened it, that's another matter, and I'd go to the app itself and see if there are settings in there.
