I think if you “like” certain items in your news feed then you will see more
from that person or group. I think this does work so I sometimes “like” items
just to be sure I see more of the ones from that person or group.
I think this might have been a tip from Kim Komando but I am not sure.

Now as far as the statuses being hours apart like one status was posted 1

Hi no there is no difference between the what's on your mind and the
status button.
The message friends button does send private messages.
The check in button allows you to check in to a place such as a restaurant
or grocery store.
It basically allows your friends to know wheir you are.
