I've seen a few podcasts in M4A which is (AFAIK) an Apple audio format for MP3. But the majority of podcast files are .mp3.

Hello Keith,

Generally speaking, there is no specific Apple-designated file extension for podcast files. Ifyou think about it, such an extension would work against Apple as most podcasters publish their podcast episodes using .mp3.

To manually designate a .mp3 (music) file as a podcast, do the following:

1.
Open iTunes on your computer.

2.
Import the desired .mp3 file or files. They will appear in the Music area of your iTunes Library.

3.
Locate the file or files and select them either one at a time or in a group.

4.
Now, right-mouse click on the selected file or files. A list box will appear.

5.
Select Get Info. A multi-tab dialog box will appear.

6.
Select the Options tab.

7.
In the Media Kind drop-down list box, select Podcast.

8.
Save the changes. The file or files will now be moved, and consequently listed in the Podcast area of your iTunes library.

Good Luck,

Mark

What's the file extension for podcast files? i.e. .m4a for audio, .m4b for books, .m4r for ringtones, etc.

Thanks, Keith

Hello Frank,

Thank you so much for your very thoughtful reply and for your precisely stated options.

As I posted in a different thread, my solution to this conundrum is to simply tag the files as I normally would but, under the media type, select Podcast rather than Audiobook.

Given that I do not use the native iOS podcast app for listening to actual podcast, choosing instead to use DownCast, the podcast area of my iTunes library is completely empty of any live podcast feeds. Consequently, all I see when I open this area of iTunes is the list of books.

After syncing to my iOS device, launching the native podcast app displays all of my manually created audiobooks. Single-finger double-tapping on any of the books results in each title being displayed just as it used to be displayed in iOS 8.3 and earlier.

While I have no objection to third-party apps, I really do try to use as many native iOS apps as possible.

It took over a year or so but I have finally found a practival use for the native podcast app (smile).

Thank you again for your help on this.

Happy Listening,

Mark

1. Juli 2015 08:52:17 UTC+2 M. Taylor:

<snip>

So, for example, I have three episodes from the Beyond Midnight radio
series. The three titles are Let me See Your Face, Fortieth Birthday, and
The Room. These are .mp3 files that, after being imported into iTunes, I
change their media type to Audio Book. Now because I have them tagged as
Beyond Midnight, under the Album field, in the Title field, I can list the
actual episode names as listed above.

In iOS 8.3 and earlier, after syncing to my iOS device, I would then simply
select Audiobooks from within the native music app, and then I would see
Beyond Midnight listed as a single book. After single-finger double-tapping
on the title, I would then see each episode listed by name.

No longer.

To my complete dismay, I now discover that in iOS 8.4, the iBooks app does
not list the individual episodes by names or chapter titles but simply list
them as tracks.

This means that when I now select Beyond Midnight, under contents, all I see
are track 1, track 2, and track 3.

Try as I may, I cannot figure out how to get each episode listed by its
episode title or chapter heading.

<snip>

If any of you have discovered a tagging method that will allow for the
individual chapter titles to be respected in audiobooks, in the iBooks app,
please post.

I have exactly the same problem with audio books being handled by the ibooks app on IOS 8.4.

As long as Apple won't display track names instead of track numbers (and I fear they won't at all) I see only two approaches to solve this problem:

1)
Tag all audio book files as music so that they will be displayed in the music app. Although this seems to solve your problem the drawback is that your music library gets cluttered with audio books and if you don't tag them to be skipped when playing in random mode they will also be selected along with your music files.

2)
Change the album name of the audio book files to the names of the specific episode. So in your case the albums would be called Let me See Your Face, Fortieth Birthday, and The Room all having Beyond Midnight set as artist. Problem here is that you get a lot of seperate audio books in the ibooks app (I got a show with 73 episodes...)

Currently I see no other solution to this.

HTH,

Frank
