What do you do in the clinical world? Where are you? I worked as a medical transcriptionist for 39 years the last six years worked with a program where some things were not at all accessible for me but had a manager and supervisors who understood and accepted that I did well with what I was able to access. They outsourced the department in March of this year and the new company swore everything was accessible! Well I discovered from the time we started the hiring process, training and then actually working that many things I needed to do were not accessible, adding copies, checking visit dates, etc. I lasted six weeks with the new company, first time I’d ever been dismissed because I could not do the work, it was not the terminology or the doctors I got but inaccessible payroll, partially accessible time clock, inability to perform tasks to route the reports where they needed to be etc. In the end I got too sick to call in for a couple of days, I was in the ICU at the hospital where I formerly worked! And that was the reason they gave for my termination. I was so relieved to get out of there that I did not argue the point. So now I have taken early retirement and am in better health but mostly bored to death. Had my late husband been here I would not have minded so much but being alone is no way to retire in my opinion.
I do not see how a MAC would have made any difference to me, as the programs I was running were based on Windows 7! I have used JAWS for nearly 20 years, and have experience with other screen readers also. I have an iPhone and a first generation iPad currently and there was no way I could have used them in my six-week horrible experience. I thought about buying a MAC a year and a half ago, just to learn how to use it for the fun of it. However, my husband’s illness and then death prevented me from buying one. Other than Windows and Office 2010 itself, my screen reading software packages are up-to-date. I could not use Office 2013 on the job, and many that I see offered are on platforms that would be a problem for me even using Windows 7 and Office 2010. So, working around some things may work for you and I am very glad it does but for me, I don’t think having a MAC would have been of assistance in my situation. In the health professions, most companies use specialised windows software which, in my experience, is not at all accessible. So, I needed to create work-arounds with the clinic where I work. In my case, I prefer using Mac for the reasons I already stated. In fact, most of my work is now done using the iPhone and iPad with braille screen input. This looks most like what everybody knows, so it is not distracting to my clients. After all, as several sighted people have confirmed, everybody randomly touches their smartphones.
