This may be over kill, but if you headed each entry with Work: blah, blah; birthday: blah blah, etc., you could do a spotlight search for work: or birthday or whatever, and all events listed as such would display. I believe it only displays future events, too, so you don't have to worry about seeing appointments already passed. I do this with doctor appointments by putting "Dr. t: blah, blah". Then I can quickly see my next scheduled appointments with that doctor.
Maybe this is more work than is necessary, but it has worked for me.
