Location services are used by much more than just GPS. As mentioned
before, if you use Uber, Lyft or another taxi requesting service, they
need your location; if you like TuneIn Radio or iHeart Radio, and want
stations from your area to show up, that uses location services; if
you download an app for the nearest bus stop or transit location (such
as an airport), that uses your location; and the list goes on. In my
experience, many apps ask for your location but they don't all really
need your location. Often when they ask for your location they will
say something like, "Please allow (this app) to use your location
while you are using the app." If you choose allow, then your location
is used only when the app or one of its features has focus. If
however, the message about allow the app to use your location says
"... even if you are not using the app," then I would advise great
caution, since if you choose allow then that will drain your battery
over time with the location being used in the background, especially
if there are several aps always using your location. You can go into
the location services area of privacy settings, and control whether an
app has no access (never) while using the app, or always has access to
your location. Some apps do not offer the while using option, and
these I personally set to Never, unless I have an extremely good
reasonf or wanting that app to always have my location. In short, I
wouldn't turn off location services for everything by default, since I
want to get severe weather alerts from Dark Sky, tornado alerts from
the Tornado app, and other critical information such as that. But, I
don't need one or more apps using my location when I am not actually
using the app.

Hope that makes sense,
Wayne
