I personally am not comfortable with using my thumbs at all. What works very well for me is holding the phone with my left hand, and using my index, middle, and ring fingers of my right hand to type. I use my index finger for letters on the left side of the KB, my middle finger for the middle region, and my ring finger for the right region of the KB. This is how I personally get the best speed.
