One possibility is that when the conversation was started, it was with your iCloud ID. If you later changed your sender info to your phone number or other ID, the thread will continue to use the original ID. One possible fix is to delete the thread and start a new one with your desired sender info. If you're using messages on multiple devices, such as iPad or Mac, you'll want to confirm that the sender ID is the one you want.
