I have a second generation Apple TV as well and tonight we used it the first time in probably a week or so and it did the same thing. My Apple TV is connected to a Sony LCD TV via HDMI and when I started playing the first movie from the Hunger Games series it stopped after a few seconds, then after a while Voiceover said "Voiceover On" and my wife said it just sat there and said "Loading". We then turned Voiceover off and my wife was able to start the movie on Netflix and it played just fine. Very strange.

I connected it with the optical audio cable just like the 2nd generation was. The 3rd generation played with no issues at all. So, in closing it isn't the optical cable like I suspected.
