The free Go Payment reader doesn't work for crap. That being said, the Go payment app is very accessible, and the Mophie reader which is not free, works incredibly well with headphones, no splitter needed. It's called the Mophie Marketplace. It looks like the Mophie juice pack case just doesn't offer you any battery. :-) They make them for the iPhone 3, 3GS, as wel as 4 and 4S.
