After connecting your phone to your computer and opening iTunes, there will be an entry under file, device. It will say something like transfer purchases. Just press enter on that entry and your purchases (ones you made on your phone) will be transferred to your iTunes backup. When the transfer completes you will hear the familiar tripple tone that indicates iTunes has finished doing an action. Once you've done that you should be ready to make a backup and upgrade your iOS. I hope this is helpful.
