Sieghard, I thought I would post my solution here, since there might be 2 in a million of us who do things this way.
Something I did not include with my question is my PC setup. It has just two USB ports one normal and one USB3 for charging. Since I only have 64GB of space on my flash hard drive, I put my music, etc. on a 64GB USB drive and keep it plugged into the USB2 port, thus synchronizing via the USB3 port. I don't know that this was the problem, but today I switched that music drive to the USB3 and synchronized via the USB2, and it worked on both the iPhone 5 and Touch 5. I had just tried them the way I had previously and they again did not work I don't know that one has anything to do with the other, but I am going to take it. Thanks for the earlier suggestions. I did all of them but reinstalling iTunes. I want to keep my old version for as long as possible. I don't like change! I would first try 2 things: use a different cable and try a different USB port. You could also do my cure-all which is a Reset Network Settings to see if that helps. I would also go into the iTunes preferences, go to the Device tab and delete any backups that may be there. As a last resort you could completely uninstall iTunes and reinstall it and of course you could call the Apple Accessibility support line and see if they can help. My last backup of my iPhone 5 to iTunes on my Windows 7 PC was late April 2014. It says it is backing up and goes through "step 3 of 6", etc. In 1 minute or so, I get an error that this iPhone could not be backed up because the iPhone disconnected. It then says "list box DELTA button". I am getting all this reporting via JAWS. I am able to move music, etc. from the PC to phone. I also could move 30 purchases from the phone, which took a lot more time than I am getting before the backup is interrupted. Any ideas? Many thanks!
