I agree it's customary, but it isn't always the most efficient way to read or reply to a message, even if you're using a screen reader. The real bad practice is not trimming your message when you're bottom posting or in-line posting. As others have said, if the first think I see is someone's signature then I just hit the delete key. There's plenty of content for me to read each day, and it doesn't bother me at all if someone doesn't care if I see their message or not, so if the subject line doesn't jump out at me, the thead is being hijacked or the message itself is to hard for me to get at then I'll just hit the delete key and move on. I mention this not because I mind hitting the delete key but just to let people know there are a few things they can do with their posts to make sure they're seen by as many people as possible.

Hello,
I could go down to the bottom, but from time to time, especially on
topics for which I most likely can't respond to, I won't.

No, I never read those either. Indeed, if someone says they want to
ask a bunch of questions, and they're still on the intro blurb
several paragraphs later; I give those up and never get to find the
questions, too.

I'm not making the rules of engagement here, but attention span isn't
endless, and folks Needing answers, should keep that in mind
when seeking them.
