If you live in a built over area like L. A. or NYC, the street maps will not change, so even if you have maps that are a year or two old, they will still work. I have the Trekker Maestro, with maps that are perhaps 3 years old or older, and in my area, they are still good. The things that change are the POI's but I have 4square for that.

One huge advantage of most GPS apps is that they use online maps which are constantly updated. How old is the most recent Trekker map update, at best they are released once a year if I remember correctly.

I also would hazard a guess and say that the iPhone's GPS receiver is very good and accurate and as a matter of fact probably a lot newer and more sensitive than that in the Trekker. The days when external GPS receivers were required because those in the old Nokia or Windows Smartphones from 8 or 10 years ago were not nearly of the same quality are in my opinion over. In fact, ever since the iPhone 4S the GPS receiver does not only support GPS but also the worldwide Russian Glonass satellite system. This is also a feature of pretty much all Garmin handheld GPS models and results in faster satellite acquisition, better coverage and more accuracy.

Sieghard

Hi. I find that apple maps on my phone is more accurate than the Trekker Breeze plus and also it is faster reacting. With Blindsquare I get informed that the GPS accuracy is 5 meters whaere as the Trekker is stated to be 10 meters. The advantage with the Trekker is it will tell you if a junction is on your left or on your right, Blind Square doesn't do that. Walter.

Any GPS app for your iPhone will use data from your plan. Many other GPS apps will not give you the detailed information your use to with Trekker such as type of street crossing such as G Street crossing H street 4 way crossing. The GPS reciver in iPhone is ok but no match for your Trekker. That all having been said, it never hurts to have a backup GPS incase you forget to take Trekker along and find yourself up the creek with out somebody else to paddle you out! <Grin>

Hi, all.

I usually use the Trekker Breeze as a GPS, but I'm interested in trying some of the paid GPS apps like Blind Squared or the Seeing Eye GPS.

How do these apps manage data? For example, how much data would I use for a 45 minute walk around a semi residential/business neighborhood?

I have Verizon Wireless as my cell carrier in the U.S. I have a good plan as far as minutes and texting is concerned, but only 500 mb of data each billing cycle.

TIA
