Well said, as usual, Jonathan. I think for those with a third-party Apple TV
waiting a bit is the way to go or get the fourth gen Apple TV and enjoy it for
what it offers and use it side by side with the third gen. But for many like me
who never upgraded from the second gen to the third gen I think getting the new
Apple TV is a no-brainer. The second gen Apple TV doesn’t support Netflix audio
descriptions anyways and there is no Youtube app any more so even though the
new Apple TV needs some major feature additions, I think it’s not much of a
step back compared to the second gen with maybe the exception of Bluetooth
keyboards, but maybe as somebody pointed out, this really is coming very soon
although if it were coming within days or a week, why ship them without.
Somehow I think Apple is not going to push an update before many customers have
even received their unit.

Despite everything I read and hear from the early reviews, I am excited that
mine has also shipped now and the UPS tracking information says it will be
delivered next Friday so maybe it’s even going to be Thursday and definitely
it’s earlier than November 11 to 13 which is what my order said originally.

I am really surprised the there is no native Podcast app or that the remote app
isn’t working with the Apple TV. I just looked it up on the App Store and it
says:

Note: Remote is only compatible with Apple TV (3rd generation or earlier)

It shows the app was last updatedin April, so hopefully we’ll see an update to
that app very soon which will add support for the fourth gen Apple TV. It also
appears that the reviews for the Remote app are dismal, the latest version gets
2 Stars. It’s interesting how Apple makes some stuff and has some services
which work so well and are so easy to use and other products and services they
just can’t seem to get right.

Regards,

Sieghard

Subject: Re: Bluetooth keyboard and Apple fourth-generation TV

Hi Brian and all, I agree with you. The term half baked Apples comes to mind at
the moment. It has huge potential, and I'm sure it is going to be really good,
but to me it's not even feeling like a 1.0 product right now. On the third gen,
we used to use the Radio app, for listening to Internet radio stations
including the one I manage, Mushroom FM. Apple hasn't included it with this
release, and there's no equivalent app in the App Store that I've been able to
find.

We listen to a lot of podcasts on the Apple TV. But Apple hasn't even done a
version of its own Podcasts app, even though there was one for the third
generation.

For both of these issues, Airplay is a work-around, but then you're involving
another device, which in my view is a step backwards. Hopefully Downcast or
Overcast will come to the platform soon for Podcasts, and TuneIn Radio would be
great for Mushroom FM and similar stations.

When, in the podcast, it became clear to me that Bluetooth keyboard support is
not in the software right now, I consoled myself by thinking that I could use
the excellent Remote app for iOS and Watch OS, and control the TV that way. But
you can't, Apple's own Remote app doesn't yet work with Apple's own brand new
Apple TV.

It's also curious to me that despite the great storage and fast chip, you get
no choice of voice in VO, unless you change your region.

On the third-party side, we've lost Netflix with audio description, and Hulu
isn't accessible.

And as Sieghard has said in this thread and I pointed out in my podcast, Siri
isn't supported here in New Zealand, even though New Zealand English is a
choice in iOS.

I think all these things may well be addressed, but if you have a functional
third generation unit and enjoy it for some of these functions, you might want
to hang on a bit. For those who think it's fun to be on the cutting edge, this
product shows a lot of promise and I'm sure it's going to get very good over
time.

I think as more developers get a hold of the AppleTV it will get better, but
the fact that you cannot pair a bluetooth keyboard, that Netflix left described
video out as a option, and that typing is dreadful I would not run out and buy
a AppleTv yet. Very disappointed in it so far.

Hello everyone. I was in the Apple Store yesterday and was told by a manager

Yes so I encourage anyone who relies on a bluetooth keyboard to think twice

around for the forseeable future.

I've tried and it doesn't work. Unfortunately as you say the new
keyboard layout is even worse than the old one and even though the TV
has Siri you don't appear to be able to use dictation.

Cheers,

For those of you who have the new AppleTV, has any of you tried connecting
it with an apple or other Bluetooth keyboard and what have your results
been? I saw an article in some tech blogger other today commenting on the
fact that typing stuff on the screen is now much more difficult, because
they don't have the grid that they used to have for use with the remote. It
is apparently one long line of letters and one long line of numbers. And the
author was complaining that this was very much a pain in the butt. They did
not say anything about using a Bluetooth keyboard, making me think that that
might not be an option. So, what say you?
