I would try and disable it first, then go to Settings > General > Reset and select to Reset Network Settings. After the phone reboots, reconnect to your WiFi, make sure you are on the same WiFi as your iPhone 6 and that you are using the same Apple Id. Now go and enable forwarding messages again and see if it sends you the code.
