If I don't know someone well, I send a regular text message. If the person has an iPhone, Apple will figure that out and send a iMessage. If they do not have an iPhone, it will be sent as a regular text message. Many people do not have iPhones or are not on Facebook or other platforms. Even if they are part of Facebook, they may not have Facebook Messenger installed on their phone.
