Hi Larry, Just a quick note about this for now.
Here are some thoughts on the latest Apple TV. Please remember these are only my opinions. Others may feel differently. • text / data entry This is by far the worst part of the experience in my opinion. the alphabet is laid out in a continuous line from left to right which makes it extremely tedious for a VO user to enter text. A sighted user can simply swipe faster to move the cursor faster but even a sighted user must go back and forth and back and forth to enter any text. A VO user has the added annoyance that each swipe left or right only moves the cursor one letter at a time, so to go from a to z takes 25 swipes and then another 25 to go back to a. You can imagine how crazy this can get if you need to type in many letters which are not close to each other in the alphabet. • Artists are displayed by songs and not albums When searching artists in Music, each album which is displayed for an artist is shown by its songs. So if you have an artist that has three albums in your library, you will need to flick through every song in the first two albums before you can access the third album. If there is another way to display these search results, I haven’t found it yet. So if you have artists with tens of albums in your library as I do, this is just ridiculous and not at all enjoyable to have to go through just to find an album you wish to hear. • TV seasons are displayed by show As with the album results described above, when searching through purchased TV seasons in iTunes, one must scroll through every single show in a season to get to the latest show to watch. For example, I have all of the seasons of Shark Tank and when I go to watch the latest episode, I am placed at the earliest episode I have and need to continue flicking right until I get all the way to the last show in the latest season. Once again, I find no way of changing this. So I find this to be simply absurd. • VO and Music Playback This one may not bother others but it sure bugs me. :) As with earlier Apple TV models, VO announces song names as the song changes. I.E. when one song fades and the next song you are listening to begins, VO comes in with an announcement of the new song’s title. This was all well and good on the Earlier Apple TV models where I could simply turn off VO if I did not want this behavior. (which I absolutely do not) However, on the new Apple TV, turning off VO renders controlling the music playback very difficult if not impossible in many cases. The earlier remote made it possible to control music playback easily without VO running. Since the 4th gen Apple TV has the touch pad remote, the music player takes advantage of this by one needing to flick up or down as well as left or right to access the music player controls. As well, you can also drag the play position of the track which can make trying to control music playback very difficult without sight. So in essence, the music player behaves differently depending on which mode you are in, and there seems to be no good way to tell this with any sense of assuredness with VO off. So for those like me, who absolutely cannot stand Voiceover interrupting my music with its fairly loud chatter, there seems to be no really elegant way to play music. • No bluetooth keyboard support The way I tend to watch YouTube is to do a quick search, check out some videos, do another quick search and so on… This is pretty much impossible without access to a keyboard. As I said above, entering text is just arduous so the whole sense of spontanaety is lost and the experience is just not fun or intuitive in my opinion. • Bugs Having said what I have above, I have not even touched on the various bugs and quirks I have found so far with the Apple TV 4th gen. They far outweigh anything I have seen on previous generations. The previous Apple TVs have been quite stable. Unfortunately though, I have already seen a few issues that are just strange on this latest incarnation. while not a deal-breaker, I just wanted to mention them. So what do I like about the Apple TV 4th gen? The sound quality is far superior to that of the 3rd gen. The stereo separation and the airy sense of space with 5.1 surround is vastly better on the latest Apple TV. Having more fine-grained control over Voiceover’s rate of speech is a huge boon. Having Apple Music present is wonderful and having apps and games available is a very nice touch. Lastly, the ability to write apps for the Apple TV is something I am looking forward to. So there you have it. -Some of my thoughts on the Apple TV 4th gen. Thanks for reading and please do have a lovely weekend! Cheers!
