It's hard for me to understand this message, so I apologize if I get it wrong, but I don't think a text to speech engine trying to pronounce abbreviations has anything to do with the American's with Disabilities Act. I can't think of a situation where someone would be at a disadvantage in an employment situation because a synthesizer expanded an abbreviation.

I agree with Gordon. Unfortunately there's nothing Apple really can do,
Nuance programs these voices. I'd bug them about it if it bothers you.
On my end, I use Alex on my phone and he says things correctly. The only
time he says gigabyte is if I put a number before it. For example, 2 gb.

to all,

as the people at apple store and few officials for apple headquarters,
they keep telling me that it is very important for al of you to notify
apple accessibility team as team would give note to the engineers and
developers who would follow your needs.

I have given some suggestions for braille users, and also there are
other things. plese don't hold back to yourself. open up and speak
out to apple yourself. they need your help.

it would be very helpful if yo share your views and your thoughts. it
would be easier.

remember the quote: you can see me but I can't see you...I can see you
but you can't see me.

same idea, apple officials don't know what you know and you don't know
what they know. so please be more helpful.

I wrote Apple Accessibility about this earlier today. I'd suggest
everyone who would like VoiceOver to stop guessing at abbreviations
would write them as well and ask them to either stop it completely or
provide an exception dictionary that we can use to fix pronunciations.

Looking at baseball, AL for American League, gets pronounced Alabama.
Cal as a first name gets pronounced California and so on.

Hello Kevin,

This happens to me, also.

The other day, I was trying to locate a friend of mine in my contacts,
whose name is Al Jones. I couldn’t find him until I realized that
VoiceOver was pronouncing his name as Alabama Jones. I felt so stupid
and then got a little miffed at VoiceOver for trying to do too much.

I wonder if there is a workaround for this?

(smile)

Hi.

I was in the NFL Mobile app on my iPhone 5C running the latest iOs. I
wanted to hear the game between Arizona and Green Bay. I got there,
and was selecting the feed I wanted. The app gives you updates about
who has the ball, and where it is on the field. They use
abbreviations for the teams. GB was used for Green Bay. I was
navigating through the info on the screen, and was surprised to hear
the ball was on the gigabytes 25. I know whoever is programming
VoiceOver to give information means well, but I wish they’d just let
abbreviations say their letters. VoiceOver isn’t the only one who
does this. I never knew, for example about Hartford, Court, or my
Physician was Drive Johnson. Oh well, it is humorous in a way, but
there is sometimes too much of a good thing.

Just thought I’d share this observation.

Have a good day, and don’t work too hard.
