Thanks, Sieghard, for the added information. I did all you said including the rice. I couldn't tell if the phone was on or off upon removing it from the water, interestingly, the phone woke up and announced a notification about 5 hours after the drenching. I turned it off and continued the drying process for another 12 hours. Thanks for the tip of drying it out for 2 to 3 days, I'll do that now.
Hopefully the time issue will sort itself out over time.

would have suggested is to let the phone dry out for at least 2 or 3 days,
recommended in such cases is to instantly make sure the power is turned off
(if it is still on) and then after shaking the water out of the phone to put
it in a bowl with rice as it absorbs moisture. If you are near an Apple
Store it might not be a bad idea to take it in and explain what happened,
the technicians can tell anyways if a phone had become wet, there is some
sort of indicator inside the phone which changes colour when it becomes wet.
