Hello list, So I’m currently using FlashCards++ and like it a lot. It has everything I need and is completely Voiceover accessible. There is just one issue that is making me search for an alternative and even then, I don’t know if it’s even something that I can get around with another flashcard app or if it’s just something to do with iOS.
To quickly summarize, I’m in the process of studying to obtain certification for Federal court Spanish language interpretation. I am indeed fluent in both Spanish and English, but as with anything, specialized fields have their own specialized terminology. Thus my desire to use flashcards as a study tool. With FlashCards++, the Spanish language TTS that is being used to pronounce the translated text is the Castilian Spanish (Spanish Spain) and not the preferred (in my case), the Spanish mexico that I have installed on my iPhone. I’ve got everything right as far as settings. Spanish Mexico is one of the languages in my language rotor and I have Spanish Mexico as one of my keyboard layouts. Nowhere on the device do I have Spanish Spain selected or installed as a dialect option. Nevertheless, when I tap over to the translated text that brings up the Spanish term, Voiceover pronounces it with a Castilian accent. FlashCards++ also has a speak text button similar to what can be found in Google Translate and similar apps, but again, when I double tap on it, the TTS is Spanish Spain. There’s of course nothing wrong with the Castilian accent, but it’s simply not what I’m used to and being in Southern California, it’s an accent that you’re really not going to come across too often. This is why I wish to have the Spanish Mexico/Latin American accent instead. Is anyone else using an alternative flashcard app that is Voiceover accessible and more importantly, if they’re using it for language learning purposes, are they able to use the Spanish Mexico TTS be it as a feature from within the app itself or does Voiceover pronounce it correctly in accordance to the language dialect installed on the device? The reason I think it may be something beyond the app itself is that the behavior is similar with other apps such as Google Translate, itranslate, and so on. It seems that the default TTS used by apps with a speak text option is the Spanish Spain dialect. I haven’t come across a way to change it to something else. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
