Mark, I am pretty sure descriptions were available on the third Gen, but definitely not on the second Gen. I also had a second Gen and of course not even Youtube was available anymore on it. I bought a fourth Gen when it came out and while I look forward to Bluetooth keyboard support which should be coming any day now I definitely haven't regretted the purchase. I guess one easy way to find out is to see if you have a Youtube app, if you do then you have a 3rd gen if not it's a second gen.
