Personally, i find nothing wrong with synthesized speech. Having gone so 
many years with out being able to read any thing, Those voices sound like 
freedom to me.

Also, I find that when an actual human is reading, it takes some of the 
enjoyment away.. I am used to the iPhone's generic voice, so I can use my 
imagination to insert any voice, look, or scenario into the context. If I 
am listening to a real human's voice. I am trapped in that one person. This 
is doubly problematic when I recognize the voice. I want Spenser to look 
like what I think he should, not Alec Baldwin.

As for speeding up the speech, I red 4 to 5 newspapers , and listen to a 
few podcasts for work each day, so with out a little extra speed, I'd never 
get to finish a book.
