What a rig a ma role! Not you Seigart. I turned all automatic downloading off
and all the numbers disappeared. Once opening up podcast again there are the
numbers followed by the podcast name and a number of how many other unplayed
podcasts are from that particular one.
The other thing is that my podcast tab used to stay selected and now it
resets itself to Unplayed. Sorry, but I do not want to see all the unplayed
podcasts I'm subscribed to all at once! Oh well, someone else might find it
helpful.

For me the number in front of the Podcast indicates the number of unplayed
Podcasts while they are downloading. For example, I just opened the Podcast app
and it said this when I tapped on the "My Podcasts" tab:
1 Applevis Podcast, 1 unplayed episode
As soon as it finished downloading the 1 in front went away and it just said
"Applevis Podcast, 1 unplayed episode".
I just turned off downloading for my Podcasts to see if next time there is a
new episode of a Podcast that number in front will be there and stay there
which I assume may be the case if you aren't downloading the Podcasts.
