Doesn’t work for me, that “damned” dimmed search box doesn’t do anything if I double tap and hold. However, if you really have to use it you can work around it by turning Voiceover off, then tap it and turn Voiceover back on. It’s right beside the mute switch so it’s easy to orient on that and tap it.
